Malevolent Favorite Characters Results! 500 Milestone!!

I planned to post the Malevolent Favorite Character poll results at the 400 milestone. A few days ago, the poll had 320 responses, so I thought I'd have more time. I posted to boost the numbers, hitting 336 responses. Then Potato-lord-but-not and Percymawce-arts reblogged the link, and it blew up. Thanks to them and everyone who shared it!!!

When I first saw my notifications explode, we had 403 responses. After thanking Potato-lord-but-not and Percymawce-arts, it jumped to 413. Despite it being late, I started writing the 400 milestone post. While WRITING THE POST the number of responses jumped up 6 times! Making it tricky to keep up as I had to keep checking what the new response voted so I won’t miss their vote. 

I went to bed with 419 responses, thinking we'd stay under 500. But the next morning, after getting my birthday cake with my mom, I saw we had 478 responses! Yeah. I couldn’t post a 400 milestone list when I was so close to 500!

And then we hit 500! 500! Half of a THOUSAND!!! A number I considered would be an “end point” when I first made this poll! (Obviously it’s not going to be, I’m going to keep this poll up forever!) 1. Improving searching is a good idea. It’s super frustrating to find things (back).

2. DO NOT ALGORITHM. People want to see things from their tags or the people they follow. Maybe make “your tags” the default landing page and make it easier for new people to explore tags. Get rid of “for you” and other recommendations (you might like). Make a tag for “new creator content” or something that people can use on new stuff (not reblogs?). I also get frustrated that my own posts are not seen nearly as much as my reblogs. So I reblog them, as one does. Maybe give everyone two free blazes per year to use on their original content? Like everywhere, it’s a process of getting to know people who want to see your work and share it forward. I have almost 100 followers and I’m happy if I get two likes on something original in the same day. An algorithm? Would make it so much worse.

3. Removing duplicate reblogs: oh hell no please don’t do this. Yes, it’s occasionally annoying to see 12 versions of a new thing. However. I may want to reblog this person’s version rather than the other’s. I might love this friend’s tags, and how will you know which to show me? I might like this piece of art or writing or giffing so much that I want to reblog it 12 times today. Don’t take that away from me.

4. “Send emails when push notifications are turned off.” Oh hell no. I already don’t read your emails and I don’t need a lot more of them to not read. Give us full control of notifications. We come for our friends not for pestering. Pestering is annoying. Don’t do it.

5. I like tumblr because I can curate it and I can see it chronically and I can reblog things I like over and over. “Your tags” is already a great place to get people started, make more of it and less of For You. Tumblr is a place for sharing freely, and if it’s hard for people to make money here that’s because the people here don’t have a lot of money to spend. We share our art and encouragement with each other instead. That’s what makes it a community.

Tumblr’s Core Product Strategy

Here at Tumblr, we’ve been working hard on reorganizing how we work in a bid to gain more users. A larger user base means a more sustainable company, and means we get to stick around and do this thing with you all a bit longer. What follows is the strategy we're using to accomplish the goal of user growth. The @labs group has published a bit already, but this is bigger. The Diagnosis

In order for Tumblr to grow, we need to fix the core experience that makes Tumblr a useful place for users. The underlying problem is that Tumblr is not easy to use. Historically, we have expected users to curate their feeds and lean into curating their experience. But this expectation introduces friction to the user experience and only serves a small portion of our audience. 

Tumblr’s competitive advantage lies in its unique content and vibrant communities. As the forerunner of internet culture, Tumblr encompasses a wide range of interests, such as entertainment, art, gaming, fandom, fashion, and music. People come to Tumblr to immerse themselves in this culture, making it essential for us to ensure a seamless connection between people and content. 

To guarantee Tumblr’s continued success, we’ve got to prioritize fostering that seamless connection between people and content. This involves attracting and retaining new users and creators, nurturing their growth, and encouraging frequent engagement with the platform.

Our Guiding Principles

To enhance Tumblr’s usability, we must address these core guiding principles.

Expand the ways new users can discover and sign up for Tumblr.

Provide high-quality content with every app launch.

Facilitate easier user participation in conversations.

Retain and grow our creator base.

Create patterns that encourage users to keep returning to Tumblr.

Improve the platform’s performance, stability, and quality.

Below is a deep dive into each of these principles.

Principle 1: Expand the ways new users can discover and sign up for Tumblr.

Tumblr has a “top of the funnel” issue in converting non-users into engaged logged-in users. We also have not invested in industry standard SEO practices to ensure a robust top of the funnel. The referral traffic that we do get from external sources is dispersed across different pages with inconsistent user experiences, which results in a missed opportunity to convert these users into regular Tumblr users. For example, users from search engines often land on pages within the blog network and blog view—where there isn’t much of a reason to sign up. 

We need to experiment with logged-out tumblr.com to ensure we are capturing the highest potential conversion rate for visitors into sign-ups and log-ins. We might want to explore showing the potential future user the full breadth of content that Tumblr has to offer on our logged-out pages. We want people to be able to easily understand the potential behind Tumblr without having to navigate multiple tabs and pages to figure it out. Our current logged-out explore page does very little to help users understand “what is Tumblr.” which is a missed opportunity to get people excited about joining the site.

Actions & Next Steps

Improving Tumblr’s search engine optimization (SEO) practices to be in line with industry standards.

Experiment with logged out tumblr.com to achieve the highest conversion rate for sign-ups and log-ins, explore ways for visitors to “get” Tumblr and entice them to sign up.

Principle 2: Provide high-quality content with every app launch.

We need to ensure the highest quality user experience by presenting fresh and relevant content tailored to the user’s diverse interests during each session. If the user has a bad content experience, the fault lies with the product.

The default position should always be that the user does not know how to navigate the application. Additionally, we need to ensure that when people search for content related to their interests, it is easily accessible without any confusing limitations or unexpected roadblocks in their journey.

Being a 15-year-old brand is tough because the brand carries the baggage of a person’s preconceived impressions of Tumblr. On average, a user only sees 25 posts per session, so the first 25 posts have to convey the value of Tumblr: it is a vibrant community with lots of untapped potential. We never want to leave the user believing that Tumblr is a place that is stale and not relevant. 

Actions & Next Steps

Deliver great content each time the app is opened.

Make it easier for users to understand where the vibrant communities on Tumblr are. 

Improve our algorithmic ranking capabilities across all feeds. 

Principle 3: Facilitate easier user participation in conversations.

Part of Tumblr’s charm lies in its capacity to showcase the evolution of conversations and the clever remarks found within reblog chains and replies. Engaging in these discussions should be enjoyable and effortless.

Unfortunately, the current way that conversations work on Tumblr across replies and reblogs is confusing for new users. The limitations around engaging with individual reblogs, replies only applying to the original post, and the inability to easily follow threaded conversations make it difficult for users to join the conversation.

Actions & Next Steps

Address the confusion within replies and reblogs.

Improve the conversational posting features around replies and reblogs. 

Allow engagements on individual replies and reblogs.

Make it easier for users to follow the various conversation paths within a reblog thread. 

Remove clutter in the conversation by collapsing reblog threads. 

Explore the feasibility of removing duplicate reblogs within a user’s Following feed. 

Principle 4: Retain and grow our creator base.

Creators are essential to the Tumblr community. However, we haven’t always had a consistent and coordinated effort around retaining, nurturing, and growing our creator base.  

Being a new creator on Tumblr can be intimidating, with a high likelihood of leaving or disappointment upon sharing creations without receiving engagement or feedback. We need to ensure that we have the expected creator tools and foster the rewarding feedback loops that keep creators around and enable them to thrive.

The lack of feedback stems from the outdated decision to only show content from followed blogs on the main dashboard feed (“Following”), perpetuating a cycle where popular blogs continue to gain more visibility at the expense of helping new creators. To address this, we need to prioritize supporting and nurturing the growth of new creators on the platform.

It is also imperative that creators, like everyone on Tumblr, feel safe and in control of their experience. Whether it be an ask from the community or engagement on a post, being successful on Tumblr should never feel like a punishing experience.

Actions & Next Steps

Get creators’ new content in front of people who are interested in it. 

Improve the feedback loop for creators, incentivizing them to continue posting.

Build mechanisms to protect creators from being spammed by notifications when they go viral.

Expand ways to co-create content, such as by adding the capability to embed Tumblr links in posts.

Principle 5: Create patterns that encourage users to keep returning to Tumblr.

Push notifications and emails are essential tools to increase user engagement, improve user retention, and facilitate content discovery. Our strategy of reaching out to you, the user, should be well-coordinated across product, commercial, and marketing teams.

Our messaging strategy needs to be personalized and adapt to a user’s shifting interests. Our messages should keep users in the know on the latest activity in their community, as well as keeping Tumblr top of mind as the place to go for witty takes and remixes of the latest shows and real-life events.  

Most importantly, our messages should be thoughtful and should never come across as spammy.  

Actions & Next Steps

Conduct an audit of our messaging strategy.

Address the issue of notifications getting too noisy; throttle, collapse or mute notifications where necessary.  

Identify opportunities for personalization within our email messages. 

Test what the right daily push notification limit is. 

Send emails when a user has push notifications switched off.

Principle 6: Performance, stability and quality.

The stability and performance of our mobile apps have declined. There is a large backlog of production issues, with more bugs created than resolved over the last 300 days. If this continues, roughly one new unresolved production issue will be created every two days. Apps and backend systems that work well and don't crash are the foundation of a great Tumblr experience. Improving performance, stability, and quality will help us achieve sustainable operations for Tumblr.

Improve performance and stability: deliver crash-free, responsive, and fast-loading apps on Android, iOS, and web.

Improve quality: deliver the highest quality Tumblr experience to our users. 

Move faster: provide APIs and services to unblock core product initiatives and launch new features coming out of Labs.

im making this up very late so some of it might be incoherent and I want to get this out before long into the year.

Alt hopes for 2022

As the title suggests this is just me rambling off about characters I hope to see get an alt or some significant representation in 2022. Feel free to reblog with your own opinions or thoughts or expand on these with a post on social media of your own! I'd love to read what everyone has in mind. ~I don't think I'm turning any heads when I am saying we really should see a Shinya alt. It really hurts that  Shinya, even after a skill evolution, is honestly one of the weakest units in the game. I understand he's a launch/year 1 character but it's a shame he really has nothing going for him. I actually really like Shinya's design and think his writing is pleasant enough. Shinya fans deserve to eat good. ~Another set of characters who have really fallen to the wayside are Agyo and Gullinbursti. I just think it's criminal how underused these two are in the grand scheme of things considering they're members of the Summoner's Guild. This is more to give their fans hope and a bit of new life more than anything just because they've been sitting in the corner hoping for a smidgen of content. ~Obligatory gamma g slot. Just pick one at this point and watch me cry as we don't see anything come from it. I think this is possibly the least likely, but it's still a nonzero chance so keep chugging that copium. ~Heracles because please. ~Fuxi. I just really like his art and design and would like to see more of him. I've heard he was a bit of a letdown in Chapter 12 (tho I have yet to get caught up myself) but I'm hoping maybe with an alt down the line he can be improved. Also I always love me a Yugioh reference! ~On the topic of Gambler's I'm incredibly curious to see what they would do with Gandharva. I won't lie I do actually like his design and think he looks really cool with him having an interesting dynamic with characters who tend to play it safe. Plus he's a buff bird man and Thunderbird getting an alt in 2021 was so much yes- ~Mineaki wasn't a character I expected to get an alt, nor was I expecting him to be as good as he turned out being so I'm hoping that Avarga turns out to be at least half as useful. He's the other Yoyogi teacher and I believe the last one of the academy to be getting an alt. Cuz Jugo of all people got an alt as well which I wasn't anticipating which I believe (at the time of writing this) leaves Avarga as our standalone teacher. So yeah Avarga 2022 make it happen please ~Nyarlahotep is a character who had quite a bit of relevance in 2021 that I was surprised about but at the same time not really the recognition he deserved. I just think it's about time he joined his Old Ones brothers and gained alt status. ~Obligatory Marchosias slot. ~Taurus Mask second alt. No I don't have to justify this one. Just let it be a reality and let me have a world where I can be happy. ~Jacob or Kresnik. At this point I'm just a Gomtang simp and would appreciate more ways to acquire Jacob. Kresnik also has that foxy grandpa vibes I can respect. ~I'm gonna throw Oz here too because the poor lad has not been treated the best. Just an alt to breathe a bit of new life into him please? ~This one's a bit more of one that's out there that I simply don't talk about him enough on my social medias, but give us a Behemoth alt. I feel like he's a bit past due for one. The main reason why I'm putting him here is because he was a big part of me getting back into Housamo alongside Ziz when I got the YouTube notification that Valentine's banner and I have had my account since. We've come a long way and I would just like to see it sort of come full circle with a Behemoth alt. I think he's got a lovable design and is someone I should probably write about in the future (?) ~To close out the list I'm just gonna be honest and say this is easily my most wanted alt and that's a Tomte alt. I was a little disappointed we didn't get his event translated in an official capacity since he's honestly a character I resonated with and enjoyed a lot. I've gotten plenty of mileage out of using Tomte- to the point I've made legitimate memes on my Twitter and Discord profiles. He's really cute and I love his design which I know not everyone is a fan of, but he's one of my favorites and I would really like to see him get more involvement. Anyways that's my sort of wishlist for 2022. I'll be honest I got most of my faves between 2019 and now so I'm not too stressed about what alts we get this year. I'm also incredibly grateful I got lucky enough to get all of the units on my radar throughout 2021 and hope that it keeps up into 2022. (Tho I dont think anything will top me getting an off focus Kengo 5... speaking of I should probably also do an updated favorite character sort maker just for funsies because my opinions have mildly shifted over the course of 2021 and new characters I've grown to appreciate) If you have any units that you'd love to see that I didn't mention you're more than free to share those thoughts and opinions!

i feel a lot. i’m not just going to reblog things for the sake of reblogging, especially when i’m not educated on the topic and could be spreading false information. when i think it’s important, i’m going to do my research and educate myself. i do understand the importance of signal boosting, so i can understand where the “you NEED to reblog” part comes from, but at the end of the day, social media is also (especially tumblr) a form of escape. let people have whatever blogs they want, as long as they’re not hurting or harming anyone.

Minor content warning for description of surgery and death

I am the proud recipient of 5-8 donor ligaments [doc won't tell me how many so that's my best guess]! They where used in my knees to reconstruct torn and unrepairable ligaments that where affected by my Ehlers Danlos Syndrome

Because of my EDS, I frequently minorly dislocated my knees for years [which actually is very common in normal knees too! Everyone dislocates there knees at one point in there life while going through growth spirts!] and all the connective tissue in my knees became less elastic and stretched out over time due to it being genetically wrong, resulting in major dislocations that compromised my ability to walk!

So, my doctor deconstructed my knees and removed almost all my major ligaments, replacing them with donor parts that aren't affected by eds and Tightening them tighter than a normal person's to add security, he also drilled a Zig zag channel through my knee caps and threaded extra ligaments through them for more support, just in case my body did ever manage to stretch out my knees!

That all being said I'll say it again-

PLEASE REGISTER TO BE AND ORGAN DONOR! YOU CAN SAVES LIVES AND IMPROVE LIVES AND ITS CONDONED BY MANY MAJOR RELIGIONS, COUNTRY'S, AND SOCIAL GROUPS!

Also! Please NEVER take how Hollywood protrays organ donation as true!!! I've seen so many episodes of Grey's Anatomy that show organ donation as bad, and the doctors as organ thrives which is FALSE! My grandfather was an organ Donor when he passed! You HAVE to die a brain death to donate, which they double, triple, and dectuple check before they proceed! You can also request certain Organs not be donated, either because of health issues or just personal preference! [Ie, you may know you have a genetic predisposition for liver cancer and choose not to donate it, or you may just feel weird about donating your eyes!]

I can walk thanks to organ donation! One of my best friends in highschool was born with a heart defect and lives because of a heart transplant! You can help burn victims! Folks with rare diseases! People who where injured! People who are trying to get there lives back together after addiction! Please look up how to register as an organ Donor in your area!

CONTINUATION ON MY PREVIOUS CALL OUT POST

I didn't want to go here AGAIN, but engines-and-gin [new username and I have them blocked so I can’t fully tag them] is making posts about the situation

They've been harassing me and others for *months*, this whole situation started in early to mid 2020.

It started with this person following me and several others [@merciresolution included] and when we investigated there blog initially [as one does when followed by someone you don’t know, you take a few glaces at there blog], we found it full of spam about Thomas characters being age changed as infants and this person obsessing over them to a very high degree, including reblogs of posts that where not clear if they where from age play or agre sources [and this whole situation was taxing on me enough to begin with to do any further digging], there where also untagged posts with nsfw and major triggers [blood, needles, violent situations]. We talked to them about agre and asked them to a.) Keep it out of the main tags due to it being super sensitive and triggering to many people, an b.) To please stop refollowing people to spam there accounts with notifications, we THOUGHT the situation ended there but the person started posting on the main tag after a few weeks on a new blog, and with that they started spamming asking others to do agre role play with them while claiming they needed it for mental health reasons [they’ve claimed they have depression, severe enough they are in fear of hurting themself, but that they also refuse to talk to a mental health professional for it for various reasons]

After these events, and several attempts at reaching out to them through different channels, asking them to stop spamming other, they took a break for a few months. However, these behaviors started up again in last 2020 early 2021.

They once again started following, unfollowing, and refollowing me on my main account [this one] and @\logging-locos  every day for almost a month while I sent them several asks for them to PLEASE stop doing so, before they deleted the account in question and started up again with *another* blog, at this point I blocked them for the second time [the first time being on the first account earlier in the year]

In the interim between early 2021 and this latest, they made several new accounts, I repeatedly blocked after realizing it was the same person *over and over*

Are latest follwing was a final straw for me. Opening this persons blog and seeing Agre, untagged nsfw, and many untagged common triggers is finally taking enough of a toll on me that I cannot handle it anymore. 

Seeing them and there content is constantly putting me into bad spells of intrusive thoughts, and seeing agre not only is affecting my mental health with intrusive thoughts but ‘Age Regression’ is often a technical term used in courts or by law firms that is used against autistic adults and teenagers. Being Autistic and Neurodivergent in other ways I’ve seen ‘mental age’ and ‘age regression’ both used in the context of abusing autistic and other neurodivergent peoples. Forcing them into situations where they lose there rights as adults. It happens more than you think, and age regression and mental age are both terms that are touted by anti autistic organizations as ways to de power autistic’s and spread misinformation. Any information I’ve found about Agre as a form of therapy is either from unsourced materials on tumblr and other blogging platforms, or very specific mental health practices that I have not found to be a general consensus. As far as I’m concerned, the content I’m seeing from this blog is not a major therapeutic practice, I cannot find any research papers on the concepts, and the blurry line between Agre and Age play is very large and not one I have the mental capacity to deal with

I have a backlog of information screenshots of interactions with this person and I’m willing to share them, but I’m really exsaughted right now

The Escaflowne Secret Santa (ESS for short) is a fan-created holiday gift exchange to promote friendship between those who enjoy Escaflowne and to create new works for the fandom.

Anyone and everyone who loves Escaflowne! You don’t need to be a part of the location we hang at or our little usual group on Tumblr. If you love Esca then come have fun, meet new people, make stuff for the fandom! It does not matter how old you are* or how old a fan you are; come join! (* = Please be 18+/local age of consent to participate in the NSFW exchange.)

How does this work?

What can I do as a gift for my recipient? What quality does it have to be? How much time should I spend on it?

Whatever you want! If you’re a writer, write! If you’re an artist, draw! If you like making animated images, animate away! Music videos, fan soundtracks, manips, whatever your talent is. Please make something for your recipient to enjoy; if they don’t like Dornkirk don’t draw or write something elaborate based on him. Quality and time spent are hard to quantify. No one expects you to spend years on it or break yourself over it. “Please spend more than five minutes and don’t gift a rush job,” goes without saying. Surely no one will give a rushed gift but so it’s been said. Don’t compare yourself to another gifter and feel bad; know that your gift will be loved by the recipient and the fandom for the care and time you put into it.

Can I gift something NSFW or state that I’m fine with receiving it?

Yes! There is a secondary swap for those who are alright with NSFW. If you’re not into NSFW no worries! Must I gift something NSFW if I’m in that group? No; if your inspiration does not lead down that road that’s alright. It’s a way for people who are comfortable in the area to give/receive NSFW while those who are uncomfortable don’t have to worry.

Can I do BOTH swaps if there are two swaps?

Sure! The point is to have fun, so why not double it?

How/where should I post my gift?

Don’t write a book but don’t submit a single sentence either. :) — An ‘extra personalized gift’ means you’d like something based on fic you’ve written or art you’ve drawn or if you really like someone’s headcanon and you want your gift based on that. A generic request is alright but not specific (example of specific: fic A, chapter 2, lines 12-54). You must also include at least three generic likes as well. What if I can’t post my gift on time or I have to duck out due to real life?

This is alright and totally understandable. There is a week’s time in which you can post your gift so don’t feel rushed. No one will look down on you because life happened. You have to take care of yourself first. Being a little late is obviously undesirable but understandable. If you’re going to be late or sadly must duck out please let Rad know asap. There are back-up gifters in place for this reason.

Deadlines and time zones

I try very hard to ignore timezone s. I live in Michigan, USA, so when I say a date/deadline I’m referring to my time zone of Eastern Standard. However, I try to allow twenty-four hours to go by before no longer accepting sign-ups or calling deadlines. If it’s the stated date in your timezone, you’re on time. :)

Blog Birthday??!!?!!?!?!

Helloooooo alll! So not only is today my wife’s birthday (I keep saying wife and I feel like someone is gonna believe it too much someday?), but also! It is my blog birthday!!!!! Fucking shit you guys! Happy birthday to this blog! Some cool facts about this blog:

1) Today, it is 1 year old (shit my dudes, it’s real)

2) It was started purely because I had a story that I wanted to post and I was tired of not reblogging fan content but only liking, so the side blog was created

3) There are so many instrumental people who went into creating this blog oh ho ho let me tell you about it under the cut, sorry to everyone who was tagged I went ham

4) This blog has grown to have more followers than I deserve

5) Has gotten me out of some pretty bad depressive episodes

6) Is my child that I want so very much to nurture

So just.... A very big thank you goes out to everyone seeing this. Because even in indirect ways, you have all affected me and shaped me in some way. So thank you, I love you all! So all in all, after I got to read a ton of fanfics online as a guest on AO3, I finally made my own account that held LITERALLY nothing but bookmarked fics that I really wanted to read. When this happened, I looked to tumblr for more Harry Potter content. Since then I have two fics that I have written for fests (1 and 2), dozens of drabbles and head cannons floating around tumblr  (under #phiawrites), written 10 fics on AO3, gained a thousand followers or so, and smiled so much more often.

About two years ago, I started actively seeking out blogs. The first every drarry blog I followed religiously, with notifications and everything, was @dorthyanndrarry. Her writing INSPIRED ME, and I would stalk her writing blog daily to see if there was new content to enjoy. Next was @l0vegl0wsinthedark, who not only blew me away with writing, but also with support. She was always so so so kind to everyone, and so excited, and her presence was exactly what I wanted to be as well. Of course, with love, I had to obsess over @bixgirl1 next, and obsess I DID. Sometimes I would get so overwhelmed with notifications, I had to turn them all off, but I would always make it a habit to go back and read their blogs later.

The next big big big step for me, was Jeni. I had followed @drarrymylove for a while, and Jeni wrote such amazing and beautiful drabbles for asks, even anon asks, and I was truly so inspired by them. I would send her asks with prompts, and to my utter delight and surprise, she wrote a few out!!!! They are still my favorites, and I still read them from time to time. About 13 months ago, she sent me a message after I left a comment on something of hers, and I grabbed on and held on to the convo like a life raft on open water.

Soon after, I created this blog on January 20th, 2018. I started reblogging like a wildfire, and I could not get enough.

Next, would definitely be staganddragon (not entirely sure if she wants her new blog to be separate now, so I will keep silent on her blog name). Emily wrote amazing songs, like songs I would listen to on repeat over and over and over and over. This was all around 12 months ago, a little after I started to talk with Jeni, and I got so so so inspired by the song Tuesday Morning, that I just HAD to write. I sat down, and in one five hour sitting, cranked out my first fic. Emily was super supportive, so was Jeni (who at this time didn’t know yet that I was this blog, she thought we were two separate people), and I was riding high.

Soon after, Jeni made a post, or said something, about how there should be more fairytales for drarry, and I quite agreed, and reblogged the post saying that if she wrote one for me, I would write one for her. She agreed, and tagged my other blog only to find out it was me all along, and I went into writing my next fic(s). Jeni gifted me The Nightingale, and I gifted her my cinderella AUs that Emily graciously beta-ed and grew to be more out of control than I thought. I was hooked.

After that, things happened fairly quickly for me. I started betaing, I joined the discord, I met so many amazing people through it (especially in the sprinting section), I wrote more, I responded more to content, I created content.

I met @morgendaemmerung89 who drew me this for one of my drabbles (that I still scream about constantly)

I met @gnarf who is an absolute gem, and inspired me so so much with the fact that she essentially TAUGHT HERSELF ENGLISH TO WRITE, and wrote such heart wrenching stories like Harry Potter’s Biggest Fan 

I wrote a birthday present for carpemermaidtales, and a present for @goldentruth813 (who also was so kind and inspiring as a writer and as a supporter with every single person she interacted with. Like... I was in awe. Still am most of the time)

I made friends with @snortinglaughter by telling her we were best friends anonymously and giving her clues as to who I was through anon before she found me (which kinda might be my MO but hey, here we are right?) because Gigi was the absolute best and I was obsessed with her blog as well as her writing such as this one

I was obsessed with @decanthrope‘s ability to say such bizarre things and weave a story out of a single sentence. There is also that way the fics were written so supremely well as well. Take a look

I don’t even remember how I became friends with Jess, @nifflers-n-nargles, but her writing is amazing and I can’t for the life of me tell you how happy I am that I did, as we are married on discord now with @hogwartsfirebolt (who is the sweetest and the loveliest and all around the best ok ok she writes like a dream) Gigi, and @slashfoxes (who had her birthday on my blogs birthday so of course we were destined to be, here is some of her hot stuff)

I talked to @mzuul a few times after I sent her anonymous love letters  through the ask box because her art literally makes my heart stop beating for a few seconds so I can take in how utterly amazing it is, and low key inspired me to try to draw a little on my own

I met @foularcadebanana, whom I love with all of my heart, and literally helped me through so fuckign much its not even funny. She was my biggest supporter over the summer with some fics of mine, and I can’t tell her enough how grateful I am for her. I wrote her this little thing here, and if you haven’t read her stuff, please fucking do here is her Big Bang (yes, she did do that kudos to her)

I met @violetclarity who is a gem of a human, and me in like 4 years I have decided, who writes magNIFICENTLY so please check her out

@xx-thedarklord-xx is literally a sweetheart (though she might try and deny it) and I am still shocked that she actually talks to me because she was a BIG name to me starting off, and I ADORED her blog so much, still do, and her writing skills I would literally kill for

@jadepresley talked to me after I left one too many screaming comment on her current fic (seen here), which is absolutely wild and boggles my mind every time it happens... we are best friends now though. NO ONE CAN TAKE THAT FROM ME

@jet-playin writes the funniest and hottest things, and honestly I loved every bit of our interactions

@assassinsdragons was one of the first blogs I noticed in my notes, and everything she had to say was so incredibly kind, and she writes now tooo!!!

@saintdrarry makes absolutely stunning artwork. I am still in awe looking at it, and you should be too. I am so impressed with this gal, let me tell you, she will go places, and I am so happy to be apart of her life

I really can’t tell you how much these people have affected my life and influenced it for the better. Of course, this isn’t everyone, not even close, but just know how thrilled I was to know all of you. Thank you so so so much.

So, as I did inktober I kept a running count of likes/reblogs/retweets/comments/ any kind of notification from the four social media platforms I posted my pieces to. This is what I got.

Tumblr total: 379

Instagram total: 442

Facebook total: 360

Twitter total: 196

You look at that and think, so what? Well, then you look at my follower counts for each of those platforms. Divide feedback by follower count, you get a VERY different story.

Tumblr: 379/977 = .388

Instagram: 442/75 = 5.893

Facebook: 360/423 = .851

Twitter: 196/55 = 3.564

So here's the deal. Why do I even bother posting to Tumblr, when I get about 1/3 of a note per follower, while on Instagram I get a much better reception? Why should I continue trying to post any of my content on Tumblr (art, writing or otherwise) when there's such an issue, not only with helping artists and writers, but hypocrites who are glad to say 'hey reblog people's art and writing' but rarely do themselves, ESPECIALLY with those who are starting out or aren't 'as good'. And I can't even begin to number the times I've seen posts saying 'the only way new artists are going to improve is from feedback and the best way for them to get it is through reblogs.' And people get discouraged! They see other people getting 50, 100, 1000+ notes on their art and are sitting with 5-15 notes from their closest mutuals, knowing they won't get to that point because no one bothers with them. And I see it all the time.

No one owes anyone anything but at least practice what you preach.

The rest is just personal stuff and what I'm doing from here, but I really do hope everyone at least considers what I have said.

So here's the deal. I'm taking a break from posting content to Tumblr for a while. Might pop in to check messages, maybe reblog things on occasion, but don't expect to see much original content from me on here. I'm going to be working on 1) nanowrimo and 2) remaking my blog from scratch - consolidating (because I'm spread out over two different emails and have multiple blogs attached to both.) I don't know how long it'll take, or at this point how ill be going about it. Thing is, as it is right now, my writing blog is the only time stamped evidence I have of hundred companions which I need for legal purposes, when I do finish rewriting and go to publish. My art blog I'm not worried about - easy enough to repost older pieces I still care about. Old main I'm not concerned over except my writing blog is attached to it.

And the only fear I have about this one is my journal side blog but I can archive that. Follower count can go fuck itself for all I care, averaging 12 notes per picture with nearly 1000 followers is frankly heart breaking.

I think that's it for my quarterly mental breakdown over how I constantly feel disregarded when it comes to creative content here, especially original work. Nothing new.

And I'm sorry if this is rambling, or hurt feelings, but I felt it needed to be said.

1. Why did you choose your url?  It was actually a nickname of mine at one of the places I used to work. (Everyone of us on the day shift ended up getting a cutesy nickname, and since my name is Wendi, they ended up calling me Wendi-bird. (Which, for those not familiar, is a reference to Peter Pan.) Also, I love birds, especially birds-of-prey and corvids. 

2. Any side blogs? Yes. I actually have an entirely other blog for anime and Disney stuff, since this one is primarily Supernatural, but I keep forgetting to check it. >.< I also have an actual sideblog that I use for more nsfw content. (If you’re really curious about it you can message me.) 

3. How long have you been on Tumblr? *goes to check* (Okay, that was way more complicated that it should have been. *LOL*) According to the Tumblr Memories Blog I signed up on  07/30/2017. So it’s been almost 4 years. 

4. Do you have a queue tag? *LOL* That’s cute. No. (And not that I think the idea of having a queue is “cute” but the idea anyone would think I’m organized enough to have one definitely is.) I just peruse Tumblr during breaks or in the evening and randomly reblog stuff as I see fit and other people get to deal with the possible spam that may cause. 

5. Why did you start your blog in the first place? I first got introduced to SPN and it’s fandom through Facebook, and on there I came across a lot of posts that I found out were screenshots of Tumblr where it seemed like the fandom was having all kinds of fun making EVERYTHING about SPN. And I wanted to see this firsthand. So I made a tumblr account. And couldn’t figure it out at first so kind of forgot about it for a while. Then I joined GISH one year and Tumblr was one of the approved places for posting things that needed to be posted publicly. So I knuckled down and figured it out. (It really doesn’t have a good “how to use this site” intro, and that’s just talking about how the site actually works. The fandom culture itself is a whole other issue.) 

6. Why did you choose your icon/pfp? One, it went with the “bird” theme. Two, I like ravens. Three, I love the Native American legends of Raven, especially the one of him stealing the Sun, Moon, and Stars. Four, other personal reasons.

7. Why did you choose your header? For much the same reasons as 6. I looked for some cool art featuring Raven and liked this one. (And it went well with all the purples I tend to favor.) 

8. What’s your post with the most notes? I have NO idea how to find this out for sure. *LOL* Especially if we’re talking about original content and not just stuff I’ve reblogged. (Which is what I mostly do.) I DO have a few original posts though. And I think this has gotten the most traction. “A Study in Subtlety” which is about the lighting used in the diner scenes in “Mystery Spot”.

9. How many mutuals do you have? Okay, how TF am I supposed to find this out?! *LOL* Tumblr will tell me how many people I follow, and how many people follow me, but as far as I can tell, the only way to figure out how many of them overlap is to physically count them based on who it does or doesn’t ask if I want to follow back. And f-that noise. I have 334 followers. Scrolling through the list, my guess is I follow back approximately half of them? *LOL*  

10. How many followers do you have? 334 Though I haven’t done a sweep for porn bots lately and sometimes they slip through. (I usually check new followers out as soon as I get the notification for it just to make sure but sometimes I’m at work and don’t want to mess with it then and there.)

11. How many people do you follow? 402 And I probably need to go through that list again because I’m sure some are inactive or we just don’t have coinciding interests anymore. But that takes more time and effort than I tend to have at a given time. *LOL*

12. Have you ever made a shitpost? Hrm. I mostly reblog stuff but of the original content I have made, I don’t thiiiiiink any of it would be considered a shitpost. (I should fix that at some point. Though you never know what’s going to take off and what’s going to languish in obscurity.) 

13. How often do you use Tumblr each day?  I dunno. *LOL* A lot. I tend to check it when I’m at work during slow times or on my breaks, and then in the evening I go between it and some discord servers I’m on. 

14. Did you have a fight/argument with another blog once? Not that I remember... I really don’t like confrontation so if someone started shit I’d be more likely to ghost out than engage. I’ve gotten involved in a few meta debate threads but even with those I try to argue with facts, or if it’s my interpretation I state it as such, and try to keep it to the subject matter and not personal things about the other people. 

15. How do you feel about “you need to reblog this” posts? I hate them. Generally if I see something like that, even if it was about something I agreed with I won’t reblog it because I don’t want to encourage that kind of emotional blackmail culture. If your message is important enough to people they’ll reblog it. Trying to bully them into it isn’t okay. 

16. Do you like tag games? Those I like! It’s always implied that participation is optional, and it’s more personal. You were usually tagged because someone was thinking specifically of you. And more often than not they’re fun! 

17. Do you like ask games? They look fun, and I often participate by sending in asks if I know the blog-person well enough. Though I don’t think I’ve done many myself. Very few of them are about things I think anyone would want to know about me anyway, or that really apply.

18. Which of your mutuals do you think is Tumblr famous? Um, I don’t know. *LOL*  

19. Do you have a crush on a mutual? No, but I love quite a few of them. 💜
